Emma, by Jane Austen

Beautiful, clever, rich – and single – Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen’s most flawless work.

This book was amazing!!! The writing style was like nothing I have ever read before. I don’t know if Pride and Prejudice is like that but I think that it is. Emma was such a delightful person. She had her flaws but she acknowleged them and then tried to change her actions. It was delightful. The plot was also impressive!!! I don’t think that I could write about a town like Ms. Austen does. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try.

All of the characters, as you can probably tell, are amazing. I will now summarize each of the main characters (and some side characters) in one sentence.  Emma is witty, smart, and sometimes interferes with things that she should not. Mr. Woodhouse is eccentric and protective of those close to him (a quality that I greatly admire). Mr. Knightly is to the point and tells Emma how things are, not how she wants to here them. Harriet Smith might not have been very smart but she cared about people and that counts for something. Mrs. Elton was just annoying and I hated her. The same with Mr. Elton. Jane Fairfax seemed okay when she was actually there and not being talked about. Fred Churchill (any connection to the famous Winston Churchill?) was in the beginning of the book a very nice man but then he started scheming and my respect for him dropped a lot. Now you know how I feel about a lot of the characters. That went on longer than I thought that it would.

The plot was also very interesting (I feel like I say that a lot) because of the town setting which let us get to know the characters better and how they interacted with each other. It also let you attend many social events like balls and picinics. There was some drama and romance in this book as well. The romance part was very interesting to me. Emma was constantly being reprimanded by Mr. Knightly to not meddle in people’s affairs, mainly their love lives. It was pretty funny actually. The arguments were really impressive. 

The setting was very well done. I think that it would be very hard to write a small town contemporary setting (yes, this was actually a contemporary, it was written in her time period, when she was alive so therefore it was a contemporary for her). You would have to study the town that you were modeling your fictional town after for ages to see how it worked and how the people interacted. Another thing, Ms. Austen really gets people and how to get into their heads (that probably should have been in the character’s paragraph sorry not sorry). 

As you can see I loved Emma. I highly recommend to anyone and everyone. It also counts as my takes place in a different time period square for my 2018 Book Bingo challenge.
