downloadSeventeen-year-old Zélie, her older brother Tzain, and rogue princess Amari fight to restore magic to the land and activate a new generation of magi, but they are ruthlessly pursued by the crown prince, who believes the return of magic will mean the end of the monarchy.

This book is amazing!!! Tomi Adeyemi is amazing and has made it onto my favorite authors’ list which I will buy anything from. If you haven’t read this book then read it. The characters are amazing and so are the plot and the setting!!! This book also features African mythology which I think is amazing because we don’t get to see very much of that in YA literature. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should read on.

The characters were amazing!!!! They had arcs and thoughts and friendships. But there was also a very important part of the characters and the book. This book was about family. There were two pairs of siblings and Ms. Adeyemi did delve into the sibling relationships. That is something that you don’t see a lot in YA and when you do it usually isn’t done that well. When Ms. Adeyemi wrote about the sibling relationships I was struck with my relationships with my sisters and how realistic they were. There was some romance thrown in there but that wasn’t as important to me as the sibling relationship.

My favorite character was Amari. She was a sweet and gentle girl who could also fight when necessary. I think that she’ll make a great queen one day. I think that she needs to learn how to speak up for herself more but she’ll learn. I’m sure of it. Her relationship with Zelie was amazing and it felt so real. I hope that Amari grows into a better person and becomes a great queen.

The plot was really intense and it ensnared me from page one. The action was nonstop and the planning was on the fly. But it was there and it was equal to the action. The pacing was very fast for a 500-page book. I was always moving and learning new things. I couldn’t stop reading for the fear that I would forget all of the information and not know what was going on. But I didn’t so all was well. The plot was able to keep me engaged while giving me all of the information that I needed.

The setting was very well done, even though we stayed for a very short time in each place. The backstory was amazing and I loved how detailed it was, even though we only explored three of the gods I am sure that we will learn more about the rest of the gods in the next books. My favorite part of this was that this book was based on African mythology. I think that we don’t get enough. Either I need to broaden my horizons and read more diverse fantasy or (the theory that I think is true) most authors only write about western mythology. So this book was essentially a breath of fresh air that I loved with all of my heart. You can bet that I’m going to be picking up the sequel.

As you can most definitely see, I loved this book so much and Tomi Adeyemi is now one of my favorite authors. This book also fills the MC With Supernatural Abilities spot for my 2018 Book Bingo. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
