downloadIn this prequel to Alice in Wonderland, Cath would rather open a bakery and marry for love than accept a proposal from the King of Hearts, especially after meeting the handsome and mysterious court jester.

This book was very good. I enjoyed it quite a lot and I loved pointing out the characters that would later appear in Alice in Wonderland. I didn’t like the characters as much as I hoped that I would but the plot and setting made up for it. This book reminded me of how much I needed to reread Alice and Wonderland, but I’ll do that later. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should read on.

I didn’t like the characters as much as I thought I would. They were good, just not on the same level as the characters of the Lunar Chronicles. They were amazing characters and I loved them to the bottom of my heart. The characters in this book were normal. Average. Maybe I had too high hopes for them but they disappointed me. They did have character arcs and secrets but I just didn’t like them that much. I hope that the characters in Mrs. Meyer’s next book will be better.

My favorite character was Hatta, a.k.a. the Mad Hatter before he went mad. He was not very trusting but he knew a lot about people and his curse. He was also very funny and I fell in love with him instantly. Hatta was the only character in this book that rose above the ordinary. I think that he couldn’t have been done better for this setting and these characters. Honestly, I would love one of those magical hats. He also threw the best tea parties ever and I wish that I had been able to get to one of those as well.

The plot was extraordinary!!! I loved how it kept me on my toes and I never knew what was happening next. The plot twists always had me wondering what was going to happen next and hope that all of my favorite characters would pull through, even though I knew that some of them wouldn’t make it. When someone died I would start crying and wouldn’t be able to stop. Even though I didn’t like the characters as much as I hoped that I would. The cliffhangers were amazing and I loved them as well. The plot was altogether very good and I enjoyed the road it took.

The setting was very good and I enjoyed wandering around Wonderland and other places. I felt like I was there and could envision everything in my mind’s eye, even the Chesire cat (and Ms. Meyer didn’t even give him a color, so I was just going with purple). My favorite spot was Hatta’s hat shop/tea parlor. It was there that he said a very famous riddle: Why is a raven like a writing desk? I know the answer that Lewis Carroll gave but I want your answers. Write them in the comments below.

I did enjoy this book, just not as much as I hoped that I would. I recommend it to anybody who loves Wonderland and the story it tells. Remember to answer the question above in the comments, but please don’t put down the Lewis Carroll answer. This book fills the With A Whimsical Theme because there isn’t a more whimsical theme than Wonderland. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey!!!
