downloadEvery seven years, an important thing, like scent, disappears from the town of Sterling and Aila, sixteen, is determined to find the cause and how her recently-deceased mother was involved.

This book was pretty good. I enjoyed reading it but there were a few flaws. The characters were pretty good. I enjoyed them but sometimes they irritated me too much and I felt like throwing the book across the room. The plot was okay but I really thought that it could have been better. The setting was my favorite part of the book. It was so detailed and the backstory was exquisite. If you want to hear more of my thoughts then you should read on.

The characters were okay. They weren’t terrible but they also weren’t terrific. I enjoyed them and they changed a lot over the course of the book but they were also annoying and made some dumb choices. They’re teenagers though so I’ll give them a free pass for the dumb choices. They were also really talented and funny. Even though things that were being taken for granted were being taken from them every seven years they still knew how to laugh. I find that very impressive.

My favorite character was Miles. The adorable little troublemaker who missed his mother more than anything. He was so sweet and so honest and I wish he was my little brother. Miles also figured out truths about the people in the town. He was bullied because he was the son of the town scapegoat and he didn’t do anything to defend himself for most of the book. I also liked how he wasn’t best friends with Alia and they made each other upset quite a lot. That made me smile, it reminded me of my own siblings. Even though the other characters weren’t the best, Miles made up for most of their mistakes.

My Post

The plot was very well done. I enjoyed how it kept moving forward. Sometimes I thought that the pacing was a little slow but after those trouble spots the plot picked up right away. There were quite a few twists and turns, I guessed some of them but not all of them. The plot was not very action-packed, nor was there a lot of scheming. I wish that there had been more of both. Otherwise, I think that the plot wasn’t that bad.

The setting was great!!!! It was very descriptive and it told me the backstory and everything that I needed to know when I needed to know it. Or sometimes slightly before but that was when things were going to get action-packed. I really enjoyed the way that the backstory was revealed to us (if you want to know how it was revealed then read the book). I also really enjoyed watching the characters play with some of the Variants. Those were amazing and they made me wish that I could live in Sterling for a time.

I did enjoy this book but there were a few flaws that had me grinding my teeth and wishing that I could throw library books. I will pick up the next book that Ms. Murphy writes to see if she has gotten better. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!!
