downloadArram Draper, Varice Kingsford, and Ozorne Tasikhe forge a bond of friendship that sees them through many changes as student mages at the Imperial University of Carthak.

I was expecting a Harry Potter rip-off. This is not a Harry Potter rip-off. This is so different. For one, it isn’t as good (but nothing is as good as Harry Potter). And two, the setting, characters, and plot are completely different. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to discuss it more with you guys.

The characters were really good. But because there were no descriptive words I didn’t know what the characters looked like. I could tell that they changed over the course of the book and I liked that. They also grew closer to each other and became each other’s family. When I started this book I immediately thought, “Oh no. This is going to be a Harry Potter trope and I’m going to hate it.” It was sort of tropey, but it was different from Harry Potter. I would love to know them all and be able to talk to them.

Tempests and Slaughter Quotes

My favorite character has to be Varice. She was so strong-willed and intelligent that I fell in love with her instantly. I think that she should be the main character rather than Arram, she was so much more interesting. Honestly. Arram’s life could be very boring at times. Sorry, Arram. Varice never let the sexism of the people of Tortall get to her. She is so empowering and she could be a great role model for girls everywhere. And that’s only a few reasons why Varice is my favorite character and I love her so much. I hope that you all love her as much as I did.

The plot was very intriguing. I have never read a plot like it. It followed Arram’s life, from the time he was nine to the time he was thirteen or so. I loved and hated the fact that we didn’t miss out on any aspect of his life. It does get tiring after a time. I loved how interesting Ms. Pierce made it, though. I do wish that we did other things and learned more about background information. All in all, the plot was okay. At least Arram’s life was filled with action and adventure.

The setting was pretty good. It was very descriptive and I could imagine myself there with the characters. The backstory was not as good as I’d hoped it would be. It was put aside in favor of the plot. That was sort of irritating. But, there was a map at the beginning of this book. That gives it bonus points. I expected more from this book than what I got. It was sort of annoying. I’m not sure whether I’ll pick up or not yet.

All in all, this book wasn’t what I was expecting but I enjoyed it. I recommend it to any fantasy lovers. This fills my Published In 2018 spot for my 2018 Book Bingo. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
