downloadKamzin dreamed of becoming one of the Emperor’s royal explorers, the elite climbers tasked with mapping the wintry, mountainous Empire and spying on its enemies. Then River Shara, the greatest explorer ever known, arrives and demands to hire Kamzin — not her older sister Lusha, as everyone had expected — for his next expedition. River’s mission to retrieve a rare talisman for the emperor; it means climbing Raksha, the tallest and deadliest mountain in the Aryas. When Lusha sets off on her own mission to Raksha with a rival explorer, Kamzin must decide what’s most important to her: protecting her sister from the countless perils of the climb beating her to the summit.

I went into this book with very low expectations and this book surpassed them. I wasn’t expecting what I got in this book and it kept me on my toes. The characters were not bad and neither was the plot or the setting.

Even The Darkest Stars Quotes

The characters were not that bad. I actually enjoyed reading about them and their stories. They all changed over the course of the book, and I can’t wait to see how all of them change in the next novel. I really enjoyed how different all of the characters were. All of them were as different from each other as night was from day. Maybe that was what made them so appealing.

Honestly, my favorite character was Lusha. She was such an intriguing person from the start of the book to the end of it. I can’t wait to see where she goes in the next book. Lusha’s loyalty to Azmiri was really strong and I loved it so much (even though her loyalty to her family was lacking).

The plot wasn’t half bad. I haven’t read very many books like it. I enjoyed the plot twists that I sometimes saw coming and sometimes I didn’t. There was quite a lot of action and drama, which was much appreciated. There wasn’t enough planning for me though. I was hoping for it to be equal, even though as soon as I got to know the characters I knew that wasn’t going to happen. Ah well, I can dream.

The setting was probably the most interesting part of this book. I don’t read many books set in a wintery, mountain setting. I should probably read more of those because it is my dream place to live (no one will visit me so I can just read). The mythology and backstory were so complete and I loved it instantly. But I do wish that the book explained the ghosts a little bit more. I was curious about them and none of my questions were answered.

All in all, this book was a fun read. I recommend it to all fantasy lovers. Remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link to it on my about page. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons
