The Icebound Land, by John Flanagan — January 1, 2018

The Icebound Land, by John Flanagan

downloadChasing the Skanadian slave – traders who kidnapped Will and Evanlyn, Ranger Halt and warrior student Horace find themselves on the frozen northern islands, where they battle a ruthless black clad knight as they attempt to rescue their friends.

This book was just as good as all the books in the series before this. We did not hear that much about Will and Evanlyn as we heard about Horace and Halt. But that was ok because nothing really happened to them once they were in Skanadia. I think that this book could have had a little room for improvement though. I will tell you why now.

The characters were very good. I was a little upset that we did not hear about Will and Evanlyn that much. But like I said above once they got to Skanadia nothing really happened until the end of the book. Then we got more of their chapters. Meanwhile Halt and Horace were going on all sorts of adventures. It was awesome. As usual all of the characters (including the side characters) were very fleshed out. I enjoyed the side characters who ended up playing an important part in the book when at first I thought that they weren’t very special. After all, if the character doesn’t have a purpose then why is in the book? That is a question I ask myself when I am writing my WIP. I was glad that everyone in the book had a purpose of some kind and weren’t just sitting around and doing nothing.

The plot was very well written. Most of the chapters ended in cliffhangers of some kind so you were always wondering what was going to happen next. The book was told in two different points of view. One was the point of view of Will and Evanlyn and the other was the viewpoint of Halt and Horace. The viewpoints switched in between chapters randomly. This was good because it always kept you on your toes. I like that in a book. The setting was very well done and descriptive. Once again, I could imagine myself there and adventuring with the characters. The dialogue was once again very funny. It always is. I hope that it is as funny in all of the books to come. I loved this book and I hope that you do as well.

I loved this book and I recommend the series to everyone. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! Happy New Year!!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Burning Bridge, by John Flanagan — December 31, 2017

The Burning Bridge, by John Flanagan

download (1)Will is forced to overcome his fear of Wargals, the foot soldiers of the rebel warlord Morgarath, as Araluen’s army prepares to battle Morgarath’s forces.

This book was just as good as the last one. Maybe even better. I loved how suspenseful and dramatic this book was. We got new characters, new settings, and epic battle scenes. If that is not enough to wow you there are also stories of friendship, family, and epic plot twists. If that is still not enough to make you want to the read the book then you are a hopeless case. Just please read this book. It will be worth your time.

The characters were very funny and I loved them. We got to meet lots of new characters as well, who have backstories and are well fleshed out. We get the story from 2 different perspectives. Will and Halt are separated from each other for most of the book so we hear about each of them. And their friends are accompanying them. My favorite character in all of this was Evanlyn. She was so brave and cunning. She was awesome. I also enjoyed Halt and how he solved problems. There are some things that make you laugh no matter where you are and what you are doing. What Halt does is one of those things. So the Rangers are pretty funny and they are funny while being deadly at the same time. I don’t know how that happens. If you enjoy a good laugh then these books are for you. And I think that most people enjoy a good laugh.

The plot was very interesting and in depth. You knew that something was going to happen and since it was a third person perspective you knew more then the characters did. So sometimes you were wondering how the characters didn’t get it. I loved how intense some scenes were and how after that they could just relax and get a cup of coffee. The book was paced just right. Not to fast and not to slow either. The setting was also described very well. It was right on that line of being perfect and overdoing it. Lucky for me they didn’t over do it. This book is an example of the perfect middle – grade adventure novel. So please read it.

I loved this book. It is so intense and mysterious. Please read it. Please also fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons

The Ruins Of Gorlan, by John Flanagan — December 30, 2017

The Ruins Of Gorlan, by John Flanagan

download (1)When fifteen – year – old Will is rejected by battleschool, he becomes the reluctant apprentice to the mysterious Ranger Halt, and winds up protecting the kingdom from danger.

This book was beyond perfect. I loved it. It is the perfect middle grade adventure story. Everything about it is great. Personally, I think that everyone should read this book. It is not getting as much publicity as some other middle grade series (like Percy Jackson) and it totally deserves it. The summary pretty much describes the whole book. I love it. I am at a lose for words now so lets just continue on.

The characters were very descriptive and real and I loved them to pieces. All of them, even the side characters, were very fleshed out. They all had their own personal stories and journeys to go on as well. I also liked how we were not looking out of a first person perspective but a third person one. It was very comforting to me. I also enjoyed reading about the horses, Tug and Abelard. They make me wish I had a horse of my own. They were really funny. Yes, the horses can be funny. There was lots of humor in this book. Here is an example of it:

Like I said the characters are hilarious. I really think that if you read books for humor then you should really read this one. I enjoyed reading about all of the characters because of their humor. I am just rambling now so lets move on to the plot.

This book was intense and was always moving. It was pretty fast – paced, which suited it. I think that it could have been a little bit longer though. This book was only 216 pages long. So, pretty short. At least there are more books in the series. There are like 12 books in this series and then there are the prequels. I can’t wait to get reading. I loved this book so much and I hope that you do as well.

Sorry for the short review today. It is just the day before New Years Eve and I want to chill. Please read this book. And please remember to fill out my survey. You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -Annalee and Buttons
