The Wrath and the Dawn, by Renee Ahdieh

download (1)In this reimagining of The Arabian Nights, Shahrzad plans to avenge the death of her dearest friend by volunteering to marry the murderous boy-king of Khorasan but discovers not all is as it seems within the palace.

This book was very good!!!! I think that Shahrzad was an amazing main character and I loved her to the bottom of my soul. The plot was very intense and I enjoyed all of the twists and the turns. You were always kept on your toes, that’s for sure. I loved how the character’s all had different motivations and ways to carry out those motivations. If you want to hear more about the book then read on.

The characters were very well written. Shahrzad was very likable even though she was a bit whiny and predictable. Kahlid was a pain and one of those characters who made a mistake and now everyone is paying for it. And the no one knows the real me trope. So he was sort of bland and predictable, yet I was fine with him because we didn’t see very much of him. Everyone else was okay. The arcs were very predictable but I was still happy with what happened.

My favorite character was Shahrzad. She was amazing and really funny. She was also a really good storyteller. Her stories felt like a book within a book. It was an interesting take on the classic fairytales like Aladdin. I was sort of annoyed with the way that she pushed everyone away but I understand her motives. After all, I would have done the same thing. Or I just would have done what I had come to do. Not sure about that. But still, if my situation had been the same I would have done something similar. It was really interesting reading from her perspective. All in all, she was my favorite character in the book.

The plot was very interesting. I have never read Arabian Nights so I can’t judge how much it was based on that, but I will read it in the future because now I am curious. Just like I want the sequel to this right now because they ended with a plot twist and a cliffhanger. So you know, gimme gimme gimme. But I’m going to go with the rest of TBR pile first before it crushes me. If you read books with epic plot twists and live for cliffhangers than this book is for you.

The setting is very well done. I could imagine myself in the gardens and the dining room. It was awesome!!! I think that the author did a very good job with the setting. It made me want to travel there except I don’t know where it is. Or if it will be that beautiful. I fell in love with the palace and the desert. I think that I want to live there at some time in my life. It would be like paradise. Please, please, please let me go there and see everything.

As you can see I really enjoyed this book except for some minor flaws. I recommend it to all YA lovers. This book also fills my That Is a Retelling for the 2018 Book Bingo Reading Challenge that I participate in. The summary came from the Library of Congress. Please remember to fill out my survey. Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

downloadThank you to everyone who rated this book. You have successfully convinced me to read this book.

Mariko was not supposed to have been tried to murder. But she was. Mariko thinks that the Black Clan tried to murder her. So she decides to infiltrate the Black Clan to see who paid the Black Clan to try and kill her. After all, the Black Clan does not usually rob norimonos with women and children in them. Mariko does not really care that the norimono is burned but she does care that someone tried to kill her. Mariko was always called strange because she wanted to learn things, and opposed to being carted around the country like common goods to marry some unknown prince. Mariko loves find out the answers to questions. So, when the Black Clan captures her she decides to find the answers to her questions. But, Mariko finds friends, love, and so much more.

What I Liked
  • Mariko: Mariko is so strong. She is what everyone would want in a strong YA leading lady. Her plan though simple was very intelligently devised. I think that Mariko might be one of my favorite leading ladies of all time.
  • The Plot Twist: The plot twist was amazing!!!!!!!  I was thinking, this plot is so boring, and then BOOM. The book lead me away from my beautiful train of thought and into uncharted plot territory. I loved it!!!
  • Kension: Kension loved his sister so much. The love made me cry. Kension did some bad things, but only to find his sister. His unstopping hunt for Mariko was so sweet. Even though it did turn out bad for everyone in the end. Kension may have been my favorite character in the book.
What I Disliked
  • Raiden: Raiden was not the bad guy. But I still hated him. I think that Raiden will abuse Mariko (his wife) quite a bit. A husband who abuses his wife is a bad guy. I hate people who do that.
  • The Tree: So there was a tree in the book. I don’t know it’s name. it drank people’s blood. I think that is just cruel. Think of this: You were hungry and you stole some food. You got caught and sorry, your thrown to the tree to die. To me that is just wrong.
  • Raiden’s Stepmom: Raiden’s stepmom was just mean. At the end of the book she pushed her husband’s head into his favorite pond and accused a servant of doing it. She was a terrible person.

Well, Flame of the Mist is a really good book. Everyone should read it. I think that if you don’t like this book then you don’t have feelings. Four Stars. Thanks for Reading!!!! Have a Great Day!!!! -annaleeliz and Buttons
