Roar, by Cora Carmack — July 6, 2018

Roar, by Cora Carmack

29939048As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people. To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks–storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters. Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage. She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

This book was very good. I think that Cora Carmack has a good writing style and is very descriptive and she knows her characters very well. That being said, I didn’t really like the characters. The plot was okay and I really enjoyed the setting. The backstory and the storms were explained very well but some of my questions were still left unanswered. If you want to hear more about what I thought then you can read on.

As I said up above, I didn’t really like the characters. I didn’t like or trust any of them and I think that I would’ve hated them in real life. I know that sounds harsh but it’s not. I wish that I had been able to connect with them. Maybe I was in a mood when I read this book. The characters did change a lot over the book, which made them better by the time the book was finished. I hope that they become better in the next book because I really enjoyed the plot and the setting. With that, I had better move on to the plot.

The plot was actually very good!!! I enjoyed it and it kept me engaged. I find that very good because of the characters. There were equal doses of action and planning. They need to be equal otherwise I will get bored of one and wish there was more of another. The book was rather short and the pacing was relativity fast. That was not a bad combination because it kept the book moving and it also left me breathless at the end wanting more. It is during times like this that I enjoy longer books.

The setting was very good but not as good as the backstories. The setting transported me to the world and let me explore it. The backstories gave me the reasoning behind everything (except one character that I want to know everything on) and explained the storms to me (want to know what is so special about these storms, then read the book). When they explained the storms to me I wanted Roar’s powers so that I could speak to the thunderstorms that ravage our neighborhood during the spring and summer and tell them to leave. That would be really funny.

So, as you can see, I did enjoy the setting, backstory, and plot. Just not the characters. I hope that the sequel is better because I will be reading that.
