The Dust of 100 Dogs, by A. S. King

downloadEmer was just about to escape the pirate life with her one true love and immense riches. Then everything changed. She was cursed to live the lives of 100 dogs with her memories intact. Now she is a modern teenager who needs a shovel and a ride to Jamaica.

I have finally picked up the debut novel by our only local (as far as I know) YA author. I was lucky to get this book signed. And this book was published in 2009. Shame on me. I have her second and third books as well. I loved this book. It was meaningful, deep, and it had a lesson. I have not read very many YA books with a lesson in them. But now we should stop my rambling and get on with the review.

I thought that the characters were very realistic and Saffron, our main character, was pretty funny. We also had flashbacks to Emer’s life in the 1700s. Let’s just say it was not a nice place to be. I am glad to be living in this time period. This book also had a villain who you loved to hate. There was not even a chance at redemption for this guy. Saffron was my favorite character in the book and I enjoyed hearing about her violent daydreams of…(read the book and see). I loved hearing about the way life is in a poor family because I have not read many books with the main character living in a poor family. I believe that these characters were written very well and very fun to read. If you read a book for the characters you should totally read this.

The plot was very interesting and engaging. It was not a classic pirate story and it had informational dog care tips in between some chapters. You did spend some time with the family and you saw how Saffron worked in her family. I would not want to be in Saffron’s family, I don’t think that anyone would. The setting was described very well and I could easily imagine myself being there. There were a few different viewpoints in this book (and not all of them were set in the same time periods) but they were very well done and you knew whose view point you were reading. I thought that was good because the past times that I have read viewpoints it has not gone so hot. My only issue wit this book is that A. S. King only writes stand-alones, not series. Otherwise this book was great!!!!!

I loved this book and I hope that you do too. You should read it!!!! Please remember to fill out my survey!!!!! You can find the link on my about page. Thanks for Reading!!!!!! Have a Great Day!!!!!!! -Annalee and Buttons
