Truthwitch, by Susan Dennard

downloadOn a continent ruled by three empires, some, like Safi and Iseult, are born with a distinct magical skill, and now, with the help of Prince Merik, they will need to learn how to wield their magic to preserve the balance of their world.

I honestly don’t know what to say about this book. It is very well done, yet I only liked one of the four (I think) main characters. The plot and setting were okay, although the plot started off a bit slow but, I understood why. If you want to hear about more of my feelings then you should read the rest of my post.

The characters were okay. I just only clicked with one of them. I just didn’t really like the other characters as much as I thought I would. It wasn’t them. It was me. The characters changed a lot and they all became better people by the end of the book. They also were very talented and they made me wish that I had a Threadsister as well. It would be amazing and I can just imagine the chaos we would wreck. I think that in the next book I will like the characters a lot better.

My favorite character was Safi. She was such a strong, independent, young woman that I would love to meet someday. Safi didn’t always make good choices, which I liked because it made her human, but she always felt bad for it, which I liked because that meant that she cared about everyone. Safi was also very strong-willed and she didn’t hesitate to get the job done. Safi will probably always be my favorite character in this series but I’ll give the others the benefit of the doubt.

The plot was very well written and I enjoyed it immensely. The pacing was just right and nothing seemed too forced. But I didn’t like how many POVs there were. It seemed like too many. Mainly because I didn’t need that many characters talking about themselves. It seemed to take away from the story. Otherwise, the plot was fine. There were quite a few twists and turns that had me wondering why I hadn’t figured this out already. There as many cliffhangers as I had hoped but when they were there they were good.

The setting was also very well done. I could envision myself with the characters, adventuring and enjoying myself. The backstory was very well written and I could understand the pasts of all of the main characters. I wanted to know everything about sea-foxes and all of the other magical creatures that lived in the Witchlands. I wanted to know everything. And I still do. I can’t wait to see what knowledge is revealed in the next book.

I really enjoyed this book, despite its flaws, and I hope that you enjoy it as much or more than I did. Please remember to fill out my survey. You can find a link to it on my about page. I got the summary from the Library of Congress. Thanks for Reading!!! Have a Great Day!!! -Annalee and Buttons
